What Are Zebra Shades?
Zebra shades, also called Banded Shades, are roller shades that use two layers of alternating strips of opaque and sheer fabrics to allow in the amount of light you want. They're a modern style that has a lot of unique customization options. But at their most basic, you can align the opaque strips on top of one another to let in filtered light that blocks UV rays. You can also misalign the sheer and opaque strips to block some light while letting in some natural light. Alternatively, line the opaque strips next to one another to block light for privacy and darkness.
You can customize your zebra shades by:
- Using geometric shapes or a chevron pattern instead of bands.
- Selecting from over 90 colors of sheer and solid fabrics.
- Choosing a light-filtering and light-dimming fabric.
- Deciding the width of the bands.
What Are Sheer Shades?
Sheer shades are window coverings made using various combinations of sheer and opaque fabrics. Some of them hang vertically, like Luminette® Sheer Shades and Norman Smart Drapes; some hang horizontally, like Silhouette® Sheer Shades and Pirouette® Sheer Shades; and for some, you can choose your preference, like with the Alta Sheer Shades. These shades use sheer fabrics to block UV rays and glare while allowing a view of the outdoors. However, they also have an opaque component. Adjusting the shades allows you to filter light or block it for room-darkening and additional privacy.
